Tying the Orange Roe

Here is the list of materials that you will need to tie the Orange Roe.

Hook:Salmon Hook size:2-8

Thread:Orange

Weight: Lead wire

Rib:Oval silver tinsel

Body: Orange or Red chenille

Wing:Orange nylon tow yarn

Now we're on to the fun part...tying the fly.

1. Put the bend of the hook in the vise. Hold the thread in your left hand, bobbin in right and starting 1/4 of the way from the bend of the hook wrap the thread over top of the hook 5 times moving towards the eye then back over the thread towards the back of the hook. Continue wrapping until you get to the bend of the hook. It should look like this...

2. Cut a piece of oval silver tinsel about 2X the length of the hook. Place one end of the tinsel on top of the last thread turns. Secure down with 4 or 5 turns of thread. It should look like this...

3. Take the free end of your chenille and place it over top of your last thread wraps and secure it down with 4 to 5 thread wraps. Now wrap your thread up the shank of the hook stopping 1/4 inch from the eye of the hook. Now wrap the chenille up the shank in the same manner as the the thread keeping steady pressure on the chenille and secure it with 4 to 5 thread turns and cut the chenille as close to the thread wraps as possible. It should look like this...

4. Now wrap the oval tinsel up the shank trying to space it evenly up the length of the hook and secure it with 4 or 5 thread wraps, 1/4 inch from the eye. Trim off any extra tinsel. It should look like this...

5. Now cut a piece of tow yarn about the same length as the hook. Place one end down on top of your last securing wraps and secure the end of the yarn to the hook. Trim off any extra yarn from the front of the hook at an angle sloping down towards the eye of the hook. Tie a head on the fly by wrapping your thread forward and back. Whip finish. Trim up any fuzz on the yarn.
