TYING THE BABINE SPECIAL

Here is the list of materials that you will need.

Hook:Salmon Hook size:2-8

Thread:Red

Weight: Lead wire

Body: Orange or Red chenille

Center Hackle: Red

Front Hackle:White

Now we're on to the fun part...tying the fly.

1. Put the bend of the hook in the vise. Hold the thread in your left hand, bobbin in right and starting 1/4 of the way from the bend of the hook wrap the thread over top of the hook 5 times moving towards the eye then back over the thread towards the back of the hook. Continue wrapping until you get to the bend of the hook. It should look like this...

2. Twist on the lead wire now if you are going to use it. Take the free end of your chenille and place it over top of your last thread wraps and secure it down with 4 to 5 thread wraps. Now wrap your thread up the shank of the hook stopping half way up the hook. Now wrap the chenille up the shank in the same manner as the the thread keeping steady pressure on the chenille, making a small ball and secure it with 4 to 5 thread turns. It should look like this...

3. Cut the chenille off at the thread wraps. Select a red hackle and trim off the fuzzy stuff from the end of the feather. Now cut about 10 fibers off the bottom, on each side of the feather. You now have a stumpy end which you attach to the side of the hook closest to you as close to the chenille wrap as possible. Secure it there with 4 to 5 thread wraps...It should look like this...

4. Trim the stump off the hackle feather as close to the hook as possible. Grab the tip of the feather with your hackle pliers and wrap the feather around the hook in the same direction as your thread. Wrap the feather around about 5 times so it's nice and bushy then secure the end of the feather with 4 to 5 turns of thread and trim off the tip of the feather as close to the securing wraps as possible. It should look like this...

5. Take the free end of your chenille and place it ontop of the hook and secure it with 4 to 5 thread wraps as close to the hackle as possible. Advance your thread up the hook stopping 1/8 inch from the eye of the hook. Wrap your chenille up the hook forming a ball shape and secure down. Tie in the white hackle feather the same as in steps 3. Build a small head on the fly by wrapping the thread over itself and whip finish.

You've just tied the Babine Special!!!
